Job #10 - Cockpit locker hinges - completed

Another weekend gone..

I'd been gagging at the bit to get down on the Saturday, which was the warmer and sunnier of the two days, but family commitments wouldn't allow, so I had to settle for the considerably colder and windier Sunday. It was still a damn good three hours spent down there though, before being summoned back..

During the week before I'd taken delivery of some new hinges, and this weekend I was determined to bite the bullet and actually drill some holes in the boat to make sure they fitted/worked... not sure about anyone else but I'm very reticent about drilling holes!

Test fitted first side, single bolt to hold the hinge to the coaming (easier to fix/fill a single hole in the event they didn't work 😝)..  Happily, they worked perfectly..

Single bolt to hold the tang - I'll leave the other hole as is, or find a screw to act as a cosmetic filler as the hole is right over the lip of the hatch..

Top dog!

So pushed on, and completed both sides..  all looking good...

Finished off by drilling the second holes on both sides and making the hinge attachments permanent with butyl tape and a good tighten with a spanner...

I now have the covers at home - two or three coats of decent exterior paint and they can go back on permanently..  once they're on I'll finish off with the padlock hasps, and a line of neoprene tape round the top of the lip to make water tight..

Time's moving on -
  • I'll put the outboard in for a service this weekend
  • I've just ordered some Silky Marine Deep Cleaner [clicky] - she's filthy (as you can see) and I want to give her a good clean while I have access to plenty of fresh water
  • Need to find some anti-foul
Also thinking about the next jobs - top of which is to complete the jammer replacements...

  1. Oooh, I like those hinges :) If you are going to Beaulieu drop in and say hello to Rog on the Silky stand. He used to own the Hurley 20 'Big Easy'

    1. Watcha Phil.... Rog's stuff got a really good review in this months PBO so I though t I'd get some and give it a go... for shame, she's grey and grimy from one end to the other... :o)

  2. Toolstation do cheap primer and anti-foul. Dylan Winter antifouled his Centaur with the stuff and it did alright on the trip up to and around Scotland.

Havant has a nice liitle area just past the big Tescos. Toolstation, Screwfix, Havant Motor factors and a Jewson yard all packed together. What more does the sailing bloke need? :-) Okay, maybe a chandlers, but that'll just bring the class of the area up a tad too much. After all M&S are building a new store opposite this blokey haven.

    1. Watcha Mark - yeah one of the guy in the club swears by it (Flag) but it looks like they've withdrawn it as it's not available on the web site any more... no matter, I have the remains from two previous tins to investigate, and if no good I'll get some Gael Force or the like... I concur your assessment of the bloke haven - I work just behind it in the Xyratex building.. very handy! :o)

  3. EEEK! Say it isn't so! I was counting on buying some anti-foul off them this spring! I've just checked: If you go into their website anti-foul is on the top paint menu, but doesn't let you select it so it looks like it's just dropped off the website. Bummer! It's even dropped off the Screwfix website too... It's a conspiracy!
I might have to trawl the internet quickly and get stocked up before it disappears.

  4. Hello from New Zealand. Restorations are so satisfying - I enjoy them. I think you are doing a nice job of the new cockpit seats - I like the big strong hinges!

  5. Nice hinges but I've been there so many times, you get some new fittings and they don't quite fit the old location or there's something in they way exactly where you want to fit them

    1. Ha - too right Bursledon - but in this case my plan is foolproof - the hinges will out last anything I bolt to them - just cut a new bit of 12mm ply and away you go... in fact I was thinking of making up an extra cover spare that I could use if I ever need to take one home for a paint job....

  6. Are you going to attach a timber frame on the bottom of the new hatches to stop them warping over time?

    1. Alden - they're small enough they may not need it, and they're braced by hinges/hasp against lip of opening, but if necessary, yes..

  7. Yes, time will tell. Cockpit seats get a lot of hard wear - sat on, stood on etc. Are your going to fiberglass them - cloth / resin or just paint them?

    1. Wanted to rsin them but it's too damn cold so I've gone for paint...says on the tin "hard wearing", we shall see...

  8. Plenty of paint soaked into the end grain of the ply should be ok, and some sort of non skid on the top of the seats - ah brings back memories! - I think you are courageous doing all this work in a UK winter !
